Spring '10 MIDTERM Instructions

I will post THREE questions on this blog and you will be responsible for answering TWO in essay form. Your response should be 3-5 pages and you should adhere to the same formatting guidelines that I have listed for your research papers. The questions are purposely open-ended to give you the flexibility to demonstrate what you have learned so far. You will be graded on how well your responses use evidence from the course readings and discussions.

You are strongly encouraged to discuss these questions among yourselves on this board. I will monitor the discussions and participate in them from time to time.

Question One:
The modern French have a strong sense of cultural identity or "Frenchness" that has been slowly built over the past several centuries. However this unity belies a great regional diversity that continues to be prevalent today. Discuss the diversity of France in terms of geography, cultural traditions, language, and its ancient past. How did these differences impact the political history of France?

Question Two:
When the Hugh Capet was crowned King of the Franks at the end of the 10th century he established a dynasty that was relatively weak, yet by the end of the thirteenth century the Capetians were indisputably the most powerful monarchy in Western Europe. Discuss how the Capetians and later the Valois consolidated power, and how their strategy differed from the imperial model pursued by the Holy Roman Emperor and the papacy. How did warfare increase their power? How did the monarchy eventually overpower the warlord nobility that had once contained it?

Question Three:
Discuss the relationship between the French monarchy and the church as it developed from the Merovingian dynasty onwards. How did the monarchy use religious ritual and symbolism to enhance their authority? How did religious warfare in the sixteenth century challenge the power of the monarchy? How was the monarchy ultimately strengthened by the turmoil of the Wars of Religion?

yea aaron i was thinking the same thing lol. i would imagine the typical 1.25 inch margins, size 12 font, double spaced. i doubt an essay requires a title page but dont hold me to that. the other dan from class said he put his name n class in the header and came up with a title for each essay. Good luck man

HI everyone,
The formatting guidelines I mentioned are linked to the online syllabus. As Dan mentioned, the formatting refers mainly to font size, margins, etc. You don't need a cover sheet or bibliography. MLA formatting will suffice for any citations i.e. (Braudel, 234).

3-5 pages per question.

When answering question one I believe that it is important to especially look at how the geography of France influenced the regional diversity of the French people. The physical separation that the geography of France created was important such as the Massif Central and the Rhine and Rhone river valleys to creating diversity. It is also important to see how the physical geography of the regions of France influenced the climate and in return also influenced why different groups of people throughout the history of France settled and defended particular regions of the country.
